Today is Tuesday’s Treats and I think it is time to peel a few more layers off of this Southern Belle and share. Living in Macon during the 70’s one thing was for certain I always had access to good music. By this time Phil Walden had established Capricorn Records and it was not uncommon to see or hear about The Allman Brothers, Marshall Tucker Band, Wet Willie and many more being in town. Often I have seen Cher with her then little Chastity and baby Elijah Blue in the Kroger shopping , yes imagine that Cher in Kroger shopping but it is true.
It is strange how things work in life; my first boyfriend’s sister lived with her mother in Macon while he lived with his father in my hometown. She and I became very good friends while I was in nursing school and I would often visit her. Located right behind her was the home of Gregg and Cher so often you could hear the band practice, not so cool at times for some of the neighbors but for others it was very good free entertainment. I did enjoy the Allman brothers but so missed hearing Duane as his guitar talked to me but by this time he had already met his untimely death.
This leads me to the point of today’s post, I am about to take you on a little visit to one of Macon’s most visited attractions it is the resting place of Duane Allman. Duane is located a few feet away from his good friend Barry Oakley who died a year earlier from a motorcycle accident just as Duane did. Both can be found resting peacefully in Rose Hill Cemetery.
As Ronnie Van Zant Of Lynard Skynard dedicated his song to Duane I say be a “Freebird” Fly and fly high–be happy. You could make that guiter talk, man.
Now you know just a little more about this Southern Belle, I am a true Rocker Chick, actually I just like music. So there will always be music playing when you visit the porch just not certain you will find any Rap.

It truly is a small world, Ms. Vickie. Ronnie was buried in the same cemetery as our family. A few years ago, you probably heard, there was a vandalism at his grave site, and they moved his body elsewhere. People still visit, though, and leave flowers. I now live within walking distance, here in the country, of the park that was built in his name. And, his family still lives in the same little burg they always have. I see them as they come through our grocery. See? I knew you and I had a lot in common!
~~~~
WOW, Inded what a smallworld it is Ms. Sally and you are one I am so proud to have things in commone with. You are my kind of person.
The good die young.
I like to think there is a reason for them leaving us so soon.
Maybe it’s to remind us life is so short sometimes and to enjoy what we have.
~~~~
Walker, You do have a point here many good die young and it just might be to remind us to enjoy what we have. You always have a way of reminding me of those things.

Free Bird is one of my favorite songs, but I didn’t know it was written for Duane. That fact makes the song more special to me now.
I get goosebumps when I see how events work out to a larger scheme.
Love & hugs!
~~~~
Karen, Yeah, stick with me girlfriend and I’ll teach you a little more than just about the G-whiz.
February 22nd, 2006 at 8:37 am
After seeing a scary movie of a dead person crawling out of a grave, I haven’t been to a grave since, two years, but after reading this post I think it would be so cool if Duane crawled out of his grave and play us a tune!
Rest in Peace Duane!
Vickie, I guess I wont be hearing Gold Digger by Kanye West on your porch anytime soon, but that’s cool! I mostly like Rock!
Hope you are having a nice week!
((((((HUGS))))))
~~~~
RC, For you I will make an exception after all it is all about my guest feeling right at home, so how about you bringing your music right on over and we will play it when you visit. You never know I mght be converted.

Freebird was my graduating class song, back in 1982. It’s a classic for sure.
I like learning new things about you, I agree on the rap, I just can’t get into it.
~~~~
Deni, This did bring back some memoreis for you then, Freebird is one great song. There were so many great songs in the 70’s and 80’s.
I enjoy sharing things about myself with my friends that I think want to know and you I count as a true and special friend.
Another Rocker Chick, well bless my soul!
And I am happy to know that we can rock on out on your porch, and not have to listen to *coughRAPcough*. Just can’t wrap my ears around that stuff, sorry to say.
Led Zeppelin rocked me through the 60’s and the Allman Brothers through the 70’s. They were indeed great!
How’s that porch Vickie, do you need any help with the sweeping, girl? I’m on it!
~~~~
Rocking Soul Sisters we are and great times we will always have here on “Our Porch”.
The Porch is looking good right now I think with Karen and Joe ahead of you today they took care of it, we got such a good group here there is no problems now.
I’m so glad you are back to your healthy self and having fun again.

Freebird… yeah.
The Brothers were / are great. Rockin’ blues - nothing better.
~~~~
SC, Freebird is one of the best, somehow I bet you feel like a “freebird” when you are out on the bike, when the weather is just right and you are riding in no hurry, just enjoying the wind against you……
February 23rd, 2006 at 5:03 am
The 70’s! Now those were the good ole days alright. I do love me some Allman Brothers and LS.
If you got that porch a-rocking, you can bet wanda’s gonna come a knocking!
Ms. Wanda, I know how to have you come visiting, I’ll just make certain I pull out the Allman Brotehrs and LS and get the Ice tea ready.
Hey sweetie - hope you are doing well this week. The Allman Brothers - wonderful music - classically written. I am a real fan of their instrumental works. Jessica is one of my all-time favorites. Personally - I think the Allman Brothers is often short-changed when it comes to lionizing 60s and 70s rock musicality. Perhaps that has to do with the Cher association; perhaps Gregs addiction problems. I think they were simply the best especially when comparing southern rock. Better than Marshall Tucker, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Molly Hatchet theirs was a complexity that the others lacked. Cool that you got to listen while they rehearsed. A friend of mine used to live next door to Michael Stipe. Good music there as well (I do like REM).
~~~~
FLS, I agree the Allman Brothers were never really recognized for their talent…sad it was. I can image if you, Wanda, Jude and I were to ever be in the same place what a good time we could have.
You are one lady I would truely enjoy an afternoon with so much to chat about and share. Have a good week sweet one

Woah, talent abound over there in your neck of the woods.
Cool post and have a nice weekend over there.
TGIF!
February 24th, 2006 at 1:50 pm
I agree that many of the raps coming out make you confused and makes it literally unenjoyable, a few of then still rocks.
February 24th, 2006 at 11:26 pm
Now, I’m the one saving up the $ for the remote! *snicker* I will send you some batteries, I just bought a fresh supply at Sam’s Club. Will AA be sufficient? I didn’t buy C’s or D’s.
February 25th, 2006 at 3:16 am
Play the Allman Brothers and I’ll gladly sit on your porch any time!
February 25th, 2006 at 12:06 pm
Howdie kiddo, just got back in from a road trip (work type, not bike type). Missed you ‘Sweet Vickie’. That would be a great road trip (bike type), to ride down and see such things - and maybe stop and listen to Duane’s Tune on the porch.
February 25th, 2006 at 3:51 pm
I too love the Allman Brothers. I’ve seen them in concert. I saw Gregg Allman’s band also. Love them.
February 25th, 2006 at 4:12 pm
Rock on with your bad-self sister!
There’s all kinds of music on my porch!
Have a great weekend!
February 26th, 2006 at 12:25 pm

Hi Miss Vickie! This was a very nice tribute. And yes, I think it would be odd to see Cher in Krogers, lol! She probably has someone shop for her now though. I loved the Allman Brothers & The Marshall Tucker Band. Now you have me wantin’ to groove already at 9:20 in the mornin’! I’m going to cue up the Allman Bros CD right now!
