Have you ever thought about the history of the months and just where they got their name, no I didn’t think you had but I found something to share with you . I know most of you could care less but today was one of those days, I was drilling that dry hole and then pay dirt I hit. What will the pay off be, a comment or two I so hope.
The original Roman year had 10 named months Martius “March”, Aprilis “April”, Maius “May”, Junius “June”, Quintilis “July”, Sextilis “August”, September “September”, October “October”, November “November”, December “December”, and probably two unnamed months in the dead of winter when not much happened in agriculture. The year began with Martius “March”. Numa Pompilius, the second king of Rome circa 700 BC, added the two months Januarius “January” and Februarius “February”. He also moved the beginning of the year from Marius to Januarius and changed the number of days in several months to be odd, a lucky number. After Februarius there was occasionally an additional month of Intercalaris “intercalendar”. This is the origin of the leap-year day being in February. In 46 BC, Julius Caesar reformed the Roman calendar (hence the Julian calendar) changing the number of days in many months and removing Intercalaris.
January — Janus’s month
Middle English Januarie
Latin Januarius “of Janus”
Latin Janu(s) “Janus” + -arius “ary (pertaining to)”
Latin Januarius mensis “month of Janus”
Janus is the Roman god of gates and doorways, depicted with two faces looking in opposite directions. His festival month is January.
Januarius had 29 days, until Julius when it became 31 days long.
Now all of that came about just so I could share with you a good ole recipe. You know in the South we love to cook and eat but wait this is not that type of recipe. It is the kind for everyone. Take this and stir it but most of all pass it around.
Clean them thoroughly of all bitterness, hate, and jealousy.
Make them just as fresh and clean as possible.
Now cut each month into 28, 30 or 31 parts,
but don’t make up the whole batch at once.
Prepare it one day at a time out of these ingredients:
Mix well into each day one part of faith,
one part of patience, one part of courage,
and one part of work.
Add to each day one part of hope,
faithfulness, generosity, and kindness.
Blend with one part prayer, one part meditation,
and one good deed.
Season the whole with a dash of good spirits,
a sprinkle of fun, a pinch of play,
and a cupful of good humor.
Pour all of this into a vessel of love.
Cook thoroughly over radiant joy,
garnish with a smile,
and serve with quietness, unselfishness,
and cheerfulness.
Enjoy!!!

You have such a way about you, it always makes me feel better, coming here to swing and drink some lemonade. I’ll even give Mike my second glass LOL. I swear - it was not me who broke the swing. Now the plants might be me, since I have a black thumb… was I supposed to water them?
Feb 2 is my birthday.
Love & hugs!
Karen, Thank you glad you enjoy visiting, just shre from time to time. No you did not break the swing actually the swing and the plants were sort of related.

hi Vicki,
Sorry I havent been by for aq few days, havent got near the computer much lately. I love my job , but it does interfere with my blog time sometimes!
I loved the months history. I always wondered how come the tenth month was named OCT meaning eight. Thanks for clearing that up.
Now I shall work on visiting a few more neglected blog friends then hopefully get around to posting something new at my site.
Have a great week.
Susan, Glad you had a chance to get by but real life does have a way of taking away from blogging, think that comes under priorities, right
Nice to know you enjoyed the little history lesson.
Have a great week and don’t overdo things.

I just love being here at your porch. Can I help decorate it during October? That’s my birthday month and it’s my favorite time of the year…
Glad you enjoy your visits to the porch, of course October will be your month. I also like that month—fall cool crisp air, leaves changing, just a beautiful time of the year. So the porch has your name on it for October.:)

I never knew about the calendar thing. Not something I’d ever put much thought in to, but fascinating now that you’ve brought it up!
I’m a December baby. I was born on the anniversary of Pearl Harbor, so I guess that makes me the bomb that was dropped in ‘69!
Trace, glad you enjoyed the little history lesson. You are no bomb, you are just too nice and sweet.
January 9th, 2006 at 2:22 pm
Okay your post reminded me of my favorite high school teacher - Mrs. Snelgrove. She taught Latin but threw in a lot of Roman history and the calendar was a part of that.
Thanks for the poem.
I am so glad I reminded you of your favorite teacher otherwise you might have been wanting to hit me with a spit ball
Glad you enjoyed the poem
January 9th, 2006 at 2:37 pm
Tracey’s comment made me snicker. I was the bomb that dropped in March after Pearl Harbor. Notice I said bomb, and not bombshell.
Have a beautiful day, Ms. Vickie. I so love spending time on your porch. Yep, one day soon we’re gonna have to get together, for REAL.
Ms. Sally you are the bombshell, a beauty in my book in every way possible,
So glad you enjoy visiting here and yes this year I have made myself a promise that I will meet you.So get ready:)

December 19th. Half man, half — never mind.
I may be the only one left out here when winter finally decides to show its face. Just make mine hot cocoa then… maybe with a little splash of Goldschlaeger.
I aim to please so hot cocoa it will be. I doubt you will be alone because you have many admires and they find you.

I was born in October.
Those porch steps are steep. It was hard to get the harley up there.
You are in BIG trouble now:) I know the Harley is very important but it does not belong on the porch.Did your mother not teach you anything GB?
Just wait:lol:

Well, I missed the birthday part when I read this at 3 am. Ooops, sorry Ms Vickie. Mine is June 25th, halfway to Christmas.
Thanks for that lovely history lesson, I love history. Now is there anything I can do to clean up or move around again?
Keep smilin’
You were just napping on the porch Joe, no problem you visit and check in often enough I would find out anyway. Glad you enjoyed the little lesson in history.
All the cleaning has been taken care of but we just might ask you to cook something special for us next time you drop in.

I’m a Virgo child…Sept 9. Have you seen Rent? Reading about the space of “a year” reminded me of that movie and how much that can happen with friends in the space of 12 months.
No I have not seen that movie Poopie. I often think along the lines of what happens in a year though. Maybe I should check this movie out.
By the way, you share my mom’s birthday
January 10th, 2006 at 1:46 am
I love the recipe!! My birthday is Nov. 9. When is yours??
Glad you enjoyed the recipe and I know you are one who will take it and share it.

Wow..I’ve been out of town and away from the blog world for a few days…Great post!
Glad you are back, hope you were away on pleasure and not business. Thanks for the compliment and coming from you it really was one. You have such a great place and so much talent.
January 10th, 2006 at 5:37 am
I like that receipe. Lots of food for thought for 2006 in it!
Thank you for your visit and comment Paula. I hope you will return again.
January 11th, 2006 at 5:00 am
This sounds like fun!!!!
lets see now…..
The best compliment I ever got…My husband once told me “You are getting more like your mother every day!”
If I wasnt afraid…
Id learn to ski, skydive, travel to remote places and play the stock market!
My mood for today …
I blame on myself. I believe we have control over our emotions. We choose to be angry, offended or cheerful. We more or less choose our moods and responses to outward stimuli.
What makes me laugh?
My crazy puppy. Ridiculous sex positions, (the previous 2 items are not interconected in anyway!) I also laugh at myself quite often.
I dont believe WALKER (blog site named “Lost Here and Beyond”) ever comes here. He is a fellow canadian who is currently on holiday in New Zealand, visiting his Girl Friend whom he met thru his blog. You can find a link to his site on my site. He is a very interesting man with a great, albeit often dark sense of humor.
