There are seldom headlines
for special everyday heroes
no there is not even a ticker tape parade
or no standing ovation for
those special everyday heroes
sometimes it’s all they can do
even to set their feet on the floor
in the morning or evening
they go through their days
the best they know how
no rainbow arch in the sky is needed
to inspire them for they have a special courage
those special everyday heroes
go through their days
the best they know how

I wrote this for those special everyday heroes, I know many of them, and see one of them each day. One is my mother and some would say if I look in the mirror looking back would be one. I of course never see myself in that light nor do those special everyday heroes seldom seem themselves in that light.
Today I watched my mom struggle with even the smallest exercise or task due to the pain she lives in and has for some time. As I watched her and quickly thought of my friend, Patrick, who died two years ago and the struggles he encountered for 25 years with Multiple Sclerosis it lead to this little poem.

None of us are heroes. We’re all just struggling pilgrims. Each being has the same journey. Each of us is handicapped, some in ways obvious, some less so. The Hero is an embodiment of courage. Courage is about accepting the reality of the moment, but continuing to persevere.
Cheers.
